7–11 rule: 2R + T = 25 in (or ≈ 63.5 cm).
How it works
Determine the number of stair risers and approximate tread depth for a given total rise.
Who it's for: Builders and DIYers laying out residential stairs.
Divides total rise by desired riser height and rounds up to whole steps.
Estimates tread depth using the 7–11 rule: 2R + T ≈ 25 inches.
Uses inches for all dimensions.
How to use
- Enter Total rise — floor-to-floor height in inches.
- Enter Riser height — target height per step (typically 7–7.5 in for comfort).
- Read Steps for the count and Tread depth (≈) for approximate tread size.
Good to know
- Verify results against IRC and local building codes before construction.
